Arrival in Puerto Maldonado, reception at the airport. Enjoy a 25-minute boat ride on the Madre de Dios River, until you reach Hacienda Concepción Lodge. Arrival at Hacienda Concepción, accommodation in your cabin, and then head to the dining room of Casa Grande, where a generous buffet lunch awaits you before exploring the depths of the jungle on foot, departing from the Eco Center. Take a walk through Concepción’s trails, which showcase nature within the property, for an introduction to the intricate ecosystems of the Amazon Basin. Located in a protected area of the Tambopata National Reserve, in an old cocoa and rubber plantation, Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción houses a primary and secondary forest inhabited by exotic fauna and tropical plants. At sunset, watch with your Explorer Guide the enchanting transformation of the rainforest during the Rio de Noche boat ride, as diurnal animals and birds give way to species adapted to the shadows of the night. You will be able to observe alligators hidden on the banks of the rivers and the star constellations of the southern hemisphere. Breakfast Visit Lake Sandoval this morning, a crystalline mirror of water found within the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most diverse areas on the planet. As you walk down a sunny wooden walkway to the lake, scout guides regale travelers with stories of unexpected encounters with poison dart frogs and camouflaged creatures. Board a carved wooden canoe for a leisurely paddle through the mangroves before cruising across Lake Sandoval, flanked by beautiful palm trees. This serene lake is inhabited by thousands of species of birds, the endangered river otter, howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, turtles and black caimans. Return to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción in time for lunch. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, take a 20-minute boat ride down the Madre de Dios River to climb the exciting Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a safe and sophisticated system of eco-built suspension bridges 1,135 feet (344 meters) long, connected by eight platforms. and two panoramic observation towers, the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway offers an unforgettable opportunity to observe the Amazon forest from the treetops. Ascend the first vertiginous tower 124 feet (38 meters) above the ground, with your senses alert for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. At dusk, under the cover of darkness, explore the forest on foot as your senses are heightened to detect movements among the vegetation and the wild sounds of the jungle. Breakfast After breakfast, visit our organic vegetable garden to discover the tropical plants of the forest and the intriguing medicinal uses, according to the traditions of the local communities. Then visit our 30-hectare Palmetum, a collection of 19 species of Amazon palm trees in a space dedicated to restoration and conservation. After a tasty lunch in Casa Grande’s dining room, enjoy paddling a carved wooden canoe through Cocha Concepción, a horseshoe-shaped lagoon. Cruise across the caramel-colored waters to take in the scenery and spot hoatzins, flycatchers, and grey-necked cotaras, perhaps accompanied by the roar of howler monkeys in the distance. Get up close to the amazing skeleton of a steamboat stranded in waters that also hide alligators and piranhas. Under the practice of catch and release, piranhas can be fished as native communities do, using a simple wooden pole. At night you can participate in the COLLPA TIERRA ADENTRO, where you can see different species and their nocturnal routines through observation from our “blinds”. Dinner at the lodge. Breakfast Check out is at 10:00. Board your wooden boat to sail back for 25 minutes on the Madre de Dios River. You will make a short visit to the Butterfly Garden before arriving at the airport. Perú has the largest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Casa de las Mariposas, which showcases the diversity, beauty, and adaptability of these fascinating insects.
